De Nike Mayfly werd geïntroduceerd in 2003 en is een van de lichtste loopschoenen verkrijgbaar. De schoen is genoemd naar het insect, dat leeft en sterft in een dag, de eendagsvlieg. Nike wilde een hardloopschoen die net lang genoeg mee zou gaan voor de warming-up en het uitlopen van een marathon. Het eindproduct was een race-schoen, speciaal vervaardigd voor een levensduus van 100 kilometers (62 mijl).

Nike wanted to produce a shoe which lasted runners just long enough to warm-up for, and finish a marathon. The final product was a racing shoe which is manufactured to last 100 kilometers (62 miles).
